The first event I went to this quarter was a hands on workshop with Linda Weintraub where she showed a small group of us her exhibition at UCLA. Before we even went into the exhibition, Linda gave us some insightful information that relates to the class materials. A significant aspect of the exhibition was putting away your manufactured materials, like your phones and interacting with nature, which relates to an idea that Linda talked about called Neo-materialism. In his book, Neo-Materialism, Joshua Simon looks at the notion of neo-materialism as questioning the “material, shape, volume, scale, composition, and authorship only through the commodity character of objects” (Simon). Selfie This idea of neo-materialism relates a lot to week 2’s unit and the idea of math and art coming together. Week 6: bioart

Visual of Biotechnology (LinkedIn) This weeks topic was by far the most complex topic we covered because of the aspect of bioethics and if the manipulation of biology is okay in art. I think bioethics is something that is clearly important for our society because it, for the most part has the goal of helping humans. However, the debate that continues to be around is if it okay to alter biological organisms for the use of biotechnology. With that, I believe that biotechnology is important for our society because as said in Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity, writer Matthew Eppinette said that “ given the fact of human frailty and the current state of medical technology, it is likely that bioethics will touch our lives or a life very near ours at some point.” This article proves the importance of biotechnology in our society as something that is helping us more than hurting us. Week 1: Two Cultures

UCLA Sex Squad Logo  As noted in her piece "Toward a Third Culture: Being in between," author Victora Versa talks about how art and science are not far from coming together, but "it is in the practice of art that the freedom lies to make assertions beyond the rational and beyond the necessary methodology of proving a thesis." This practice of art is something I deal with almost every time I step into Kaufman Hall, the World Arts and Cultures building. Being in what is considered the most north campus major causes me and my peers to be stereotyped as being more on the art side of the two cultures. This idea of stereotypes relates to Lecture part II, which proves that the education system has reinforced these stereotypes of the mad artist, something that all WAC majors are viewed as being from the outside majors.
